马德里理工大学建立于1971年，是西班牙教育部的重点国立大学之一，学校的历史可以追溯到18世纪卡洛斯三世在位期间，学校的前身——高等技术学院是当时西班牙唯一一所教授建筑与工程的大学，因此可以好不夸张的说，西班牙的大部分科学技术都是由马德里理工大学建筑与工程学院铸就的。该校为西班牙的发展与进步、世界科学技术的推进做出了巨大贡献。

马德里理工大学在最新的世界大学学术排行榜上，排名第701-800之间，是西班牙理工科排名第一的大学。

马德里理工大学现在共有4个校区，23个学院，15个科研中心，提供39个本科学位，55个硕士学位，47和博士学位项目。马德里理工大学是西班牙最大、历史最悠久的专门性理工大学，航空航天、能源、电气、计算机科学、信息管理、工业工程、化工、农业技术、建筑等领域均处于西班牙及欧洲领先水平。
