高威大学位于爱尔兰西海岸的高威市，前身为建立于1845年的高威女王大学，1849年10月30日开始对学生开放。1908年成为独立的国家大学，并改名为高威大学。1997年与都柏林大学、科克大学、梅努斯大学一起命名为爱尔兰国立大学，即爱尔兰国立高威大学。

自60年代以来，随着爱尔兰政府对高等教育的普及和企业与大学的合作日益密切，高威大学无论是从规模上还是学校的研究水平方面都取得了突飞猛进的发展，大学分为文学院、理学院、商学院、工程学院、凯尔特研究学院、医学与健康科学院和法学院等7个学院和50多个部门。 爱尔兰国立大学十分重视“学生经历”。学校以提供高质量理论的课程及使学生全方位发展为己任。学校的“以学生为本”和“以每一位在校学生得到全面发展为优先条件”的治学理念使得学校声明远扬，曾被评为2002-2003爱尔兰年度大学。
